Thousands without power in Virginia

VIRGINIA — Thousands of customers across Virginia are without electricity as winter weather continues to impact parts of the Commonwealth.

According to PowerOutage.us, 7,920 homes and businesses are currently without power statewide, accounting for 0.19% of the 4,079,260 customers tracked. Virginia now ranks ninth in the nation for total power outages and 12th nationwide for the percentage of customers affected.

The most significant outages are concentrated in Washington County, where 5,050 customers are without power. By percentage, Washington County is the hardest hit locality in the state, with 20.85% of customers affected.

Among the 23 utilities tracked in VirginiaAppalachian Power Company reports the largest number of outages, with 6,818 customers currently without electricityBVU Authority has the highest percentage of customers impacted, with 4.21% without power.

Utility crews continue working to restore service as weather and road conditions allow. Officials note that additional outages remain possible as icy conditions persist and tree limbs and power lines continue to be stressed by winter weather.
