Thousands without power in Virginia

VIRGINIA — More than 7,000 customers are without electricity across Virginia as of Sunday evening, according to data from PowerOutage.us.

Officials reported 7,004 outages statewide, affecting about 0.17% of more than 4 million customers tracked.

The largest number of outages are reported in Fairfax County, where 2,783 customers were without power.

Portsmouth followed with 2,551 outages. Additional outages were reported in Virginia Beach with 601 customers affected, Southampton County with 271, Suffolk with 238 and Norfolk with 186.

Utility provider Dominion Energy reported the majority of outages, with 6,926 customers without power. Smaller numbers of outages were reported by other utilities, including Rappahannock Electric Cooperative and Appalachian Power.

Virginia ranked among the states with the highest number of outages nationwide Sunday evening, according to the tracking service.

The cause of the outages was not immediately clear. Utility crews are working to restore power, though no estimated restoration times were provided.
