Thousands without power in Michigan

MICHIGAN — Thousands of homes and businesses across Michigan are without electricity Friday evening as outages were reported in several counties across the state.

According to the latest outage data, 8,859 customers are currently without power in Michigan, representing about 0.17% of the 5,072,443 customers tracked statewide. The information was updated approximately nine minutes before the report.

Michigan currently has the second-highest number of power outages in the United States and ranks fourth nationwide for the percentage of customers affected.

The largest concentration of outages is in St. Joseph County, where 5,113 customers are without electricity. The county is also the hardest hit by percentage, with 19.38% of customers affected.

Other counties reporting outages include Calhoun County with 2,219 outagesKent County with 506Bay County with 394, and Newaygo County with 168. Smaller numbers of outages have also been reported in Berrien, Cass, and Saginaw counties.

Among utilities, Indiana Michigan Power reports the highest number of customers without service, with 5,313 outages statewide. The utility also has the highest percentage of customers affected, with approximately 4.04% of its customers without power.

Utility crews are working to restore electricity as quickly as possible. Residents experiencing outages are encouraged to report outages to their utility provider and follow local safety guidance until service is restored.
