KENTUCKY — A risk for severe thunderstorms is forecast across parts of Kentucky on Saturday, and the storms could lead to scattered power outages in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, a slight risk of severe thunderstorms is expected across portions of the lower Ohio Valley on Saturday as a storm system moves through the region.

Forecasters say scattered severe thunderstorms are possible from Saturday morning into the evening across areas stretching from Texas into the lower Mississippi Valley and northward into parts of the Ohio Valley, including Kentucky.

The main threats from these storms include damaging wind gusts, heavy rainfall and the possibility of isolated tornadoes.

Strong winds produced by severe thunderstorms are capable of bringing down trees and power lines. When that occurs, thousands of homes and businesses can lose electricity. Kentucky has experienced similar situations during past severe weather events, when powerful storms knocked out power to large numbers of customers across multiple counties.

If storms become more widespread or move across populated areas, outages could increase quickly as trees and debris damage electrical infrastructure.

Utility crews often prepare in advance for potential outages when severe weather is expected. Residents are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring weather updates throughout the day Saturday and to be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
