SOUTH CAROLINA — South Carolina residents may encounter mountain lions, also known as cougars or pumas, although confirmed sightings are rare.
Wildlife experts say these large cats are native to North America but were believed to be extirpated from much of the eastern United States, including South Carolina, by the early 1900s.
However, occasional reports suggest that some mountain lions may be traveling from western states or Canada, or that small populations could be reestablishing themselves in remote areas.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources encourages residents to report any sightings and to exercise caution, especially when hiking or spending time outdoors.
While mountain lions typically avoid humans, experts advise keeping pets indoors and securing food sources to prevent attracting wildlife.
