The possibility of measurable snowfall in Tennessee for the remainder of November

TENNESSEE — While early-season snow is not an everyday occurrence in Tennessee, November has brought measurable snow to the state several times in past years — making it entirely possible again this month.

Weather records from the National Weather Service show that Tennessee has experienced notable November snowfalls, particularly in the higher elevations of the Cumberland Plateau and the Smoky Mountains.

For instance, Knoxville has recorded measurable snow as early as November 1, and Nashville has seen November snowfall in multiple years, including a 1.5-inch event in 2014.

The Great Smoky Mountains often receive their first significant snowfalls in mid to late November as colder air masses move south from Canada.

With this month’s widespread cold pattern and recent snow across much of the eastern United States, the setup demonstrates that Tennessee is not immune to November snow events.

While forecasters are not predicting any specific storm at this time, the historical data show that measurable snow in Tennessee during November is not unusual — especially in the mountains and higher elevations.
