The possibility of a foot of snow in Pennsylvania in January

PENNSYLVANIA — Pennsylvania’s winter weather patterns make it possible for a single storm in January to produce 12 inches of snow or more, according to historical climate records and snowfall data.

State climate summaries show that significant snowstorms are not uncommon during the coldest month of the year. January is typically one of Pennsylvania’s snowiest months, with frequent nor’easters and lake-effect systems capable of producing heavy snowfall totals across the state.

Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, State College and other locations have all recorded individual January storms with snowfall well above a foot in past decades.

Official National Weather Service climatology indicates that many parts of Pennsylvania average total January snowfall in the range of 8 to 15 inches annually, with individual storms accounting for a large share of those totals.

In some winters, a single storm has been responsible for the majority of the month’s snow accumulation. For example, official records from the Pittsburgh and Harrisburg forecast offices include multiple January events since the early 20th century that produced 12 inches or more at individual reporting stations.

Meteorologists point out that the combination of cold air, ample moisture and the right storm track creates favorable conditions for heavy snowfall across much of Pennsylvania in January. Although variations occur from year to year, past climate data demonstrates that heavy snow events are well within the historical norm for the state.

Because Pennsylvania spans several climate zones — from the Appalachian Mountains to the southern border — localized snowfall totals can vary widely within a single storm. Mountainous regions, including parts of the Pocono and Laurel highlands, often see higher snow totals than lower elevations, further increasing the likelihood that a major winter storm could yield a foot or more of snow in those areas.

While future weather outcomes cannot be predicted with certainty, Pennsylvania’s historical snowfall records confirm that January snowstorms producing 12 inches or more have occurred repeatedly, underscoring that such an event remains a realistic possibility for residents and planners throughout the state.
