SOUTH CAROLINA — A temporary lockdown was ordered at Battery Creek High School on Tuesday morning after a student was found with inoperable firearm parts, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said a newly installed weapons detection device alerted when a 17-year-old student entered the school. A subsequent safety search of the student and his belongings uncovered several gun components, including an upper receiver for a rifle.

A school resource officer took possession of the items, which were later examined and determined to be inoperable. As a precaution, the school was briefly placed on lockdown. Authorities said the situation was resolved quickly and without injuries or further incident.

The student’s guardian was contacted and responded to the school, and the student was released into their custody. The sheriff’s office said the student was not charged. The firearm components were placed into evidence for safekeeping.

In a statement, the sheriff’s office reminded families that weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited on all Beaufort County School District campuses. Officials also urged parents and guardians to talk with students about the seriousness of bringing weapon-related items to school and the importance of immediately reporting any knowledge of weapons on school grounds to school staff.
