NORTH CAROLINA — A first-grade student at Pembroke Elementary School has been suspended for one year after a staff member discovered a handgun tucked in the child’s waistband on Thursday, officials said.

According to the Public Schools of Robeson County, the staff member noticed an unusual object on the student’s side and pulled him aside.

The weapon was found, and the child was immediately separated from classmates. No injuries were reported.

“We commend the swift action of the staff member and administration this morning at Pembroke Elementary School,” said PSRC Chief Communications Officer Jessica Sealey. “As always, we encourage all students and staff to speak up or report any activity that seems suspicious. We are grateful that the staff member trusted their instincts and acted quickly and professionally to ensure a safe environment for our students and staff.”

The district has not released the student’s name due to his age. Local law enforcement investigated the incident, and the school day continued without further disruption.
