TENNESSEE — A 17-year-old student was found with a gun at Riverdale High School in Rutherford County on Tuesday morning after the school’s weapons detection system alerted authorities.
School officials searched the student and discovered the firearm in the student’s jacket pocket.
The gun was confiscated, and the student was detained and taken to the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center. Charges are pending, and the student is expected to be expelled.
Rutherford County Schools Director Dr. Jimmy Sullivan said the situation highlights the importance of the district’s newly implemented weapons detection systems, which are now in place at every school to prevent weapons from entering campuses.
