NORTH CAROLINA — A student and an 18-year-old relative were arrested Wednesday after a threat prompted a lockdown at Thomasville High School, according to the Thomasville Police Department.
Authorities said the incident began just before 2 p.m. when a school resource officer requested assistance after two individuals approached a secured campus gate and implied they were armed.
Investigators said the situation stemmed from a verbal altercation between students earlier in the day. One student left campus and later returned with a relative.
Officials said the pair approached the gate, made threats and suggested they had a weapon before walking away when confronted by the school resource officer.
Responding officers located the two individuals on Bulldog Drive near Unity Street and took them into custody.
During the investigation, authorities said a K-9 unit located a backpack in a wooded area on school property. Inside the bag, officers found a firearm.
The juvenile student is being processed at the police department, and the 18-year-old relative was also taken into custody. Their names have not been released.
As a precaution, the school was placed on lockdown, which was lifted once the situation was secured.
The investigation remains ongoing.
