FLORIDA — A 17-year-old student was taken into custody Friday morning after attempting to bring a loaded firearm onto the campus of Palm Bay Magnet High School, according to the Melbourne Police Department.
Police said the weapon was detected by an OPENGATE weapons detection system as the student entered the school. Officers immediately confiscated the firearm and detained the student.
The teen, identified as a Melbourne resident, has been charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds and possession of a firearm by a minor under 18.
No injuries were reported, and police say the investigation is ongoing.
