FLORIDA — Spring break celebrations in Daytona Beach turned chaotic over the weekend as multiple incidents, including reported gunfire and the shooting of a police officer, prompted a heavy law enforcement response.
City officials said the unrest began Saturday when a large, unsanctioned spring break gathering brought massive crowds to the beachside area near Ocean Walk Resort. Video recorded from a nearby balcony shows people running as deputies moved into the area to respond.
Officials said they were not aware that such a large gathering was planned. Authorities have not yet confirmed what caused the initial panic among beachgoers.
Later that night, shots were reported around 11 p.m. near Main Street and North Coates Street. Videos circulating on social media captured crowds fleeing the area after gunfire was heard. Authorities have not released details about injuries related to the shooting.
On Sunday morning, a South Daytona police officer was shot during a pursuit that ended in a crash on Interstate 95. Police said the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Todd Martin, barricaded himself inside a patrol vehicle after the crash. The vehicle caught fire, leaving Martin with severe burns. He remains in critical condition.
Officials said the injured officer is in good spirits.
Daytona Beach city leaders said they are coordinating with public safety agencies to address the incidents and ensure safety during the busy spring break period.
