NORTH CAROLINA — Winter weather is increasingly likely across parts of North Carolina on Friday, particularly in areas north and west of Raleigh, according to updated forecasts.
State transportation crews are preparing to treat roads ahead of the system, which is now expected to arrive earlier than originally predicted.
Weather models on Thursday showed the storm system speeding up, with precipitation possibly beginning overnight and continuing into the Friday morning commute.
Counties along the North Carolina–Virginia border may see snow accumulate on bridges and grassy areas early Friday. Forecasters say temperatures in the northern counties should be cold enough to support a wintry mix of sleet and snow from roughly 3 a.m. until midday.
Farther south, including Raleigh and beyond, the system is expected to bring mostly cold rain.
Officials warn that regardless of whether areas see wintry precipitation or chilly rain, travel impacts are likely Friday morning. Drivers are urged to allow extra time, use caution, and monitor forecast updates and road conditions.
