INDIANA — Six juveniles were arrested Thursday afternoon after police say they were riding electric bikes recklessly through McCordsville.
According to the McCordsville Police Department, officers were called around 4:45 p.m. on March 5 to the area of County Road 600 West and County Road 900 North after receiving multiple reports of a large group of juveniles riding e bikes in the roadway. Callers reported the group was performing wheelies, passing vehicles on the shoulder and disregarding traffic signals.
Police said an officer located the group as they turned westbound onto U.S. 36. The officer reportedly observed the juveniles riding across multiple lanes of traffic while at least one rider performed a wheelie while passing vehicles. Authorities estimated the group was traveling at speeds of about 40 miles per hour.
The officer activated emergency lights and siren and issued verbal commands over a loudspeaker, but police said the riders continued westbound and refused to stop. Officers reported the group was weaving between lanes, blocking traffic and creating what they described as a significant safety hazard for both themselves and other drivers.
Police said the group continued for about a third of a mile and allegedly passed a driver in oncoming traffic before turning into the parking lot of a Meijer store located at 6939 W. Broadway. The riders then continued traveling both on and off the roadway through the parking lot and onto Carroll Road.
The pursuit was later terminated out of an abundance of caution while officers from other agencies responded to the area to search for the suspects.
Authorities said six juveniles between the ages of 13 and 17 were eventually taken into custody without incident.
