Several inches of snow possible in Wisconsin this weekend

WISCONSIN — A winter storm watch has been issued for several northern Wisconsin counties, with heavy snow and hazardous travel conditions possible from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The watch covers Vilas, Oneida, Forest, Florence and northern Marinette counties. Communities expected to be affected include Rhinelander, Eagle River, Lac du Flambeau, Crandon, Niagara, Commonwealth, Spread Eagle, Aurora, Wausaukee and surrounding areas.

Forecasters say the storm could bring widespread snowfall totals of 4 to 6 inches across the region.

During periods of heavier snow, winds could gust up to 35 miles per hour, reducing visibility to one mile or less and creating difficult driving conditions. Blowing and drifting snow may further impact roadways, especially in open and rural areas.

The snow is expected to begin Sunday afternoon and continue into Monday morning, potentially affecting the Monday commute. Officials warn that travel could be very difficult at times, particularly overnight Sunday into early Monday, when snowfall rates and wind gusts may be highest.

While the winter storm watch highlights the potential for significant impacts, exact snowfall totals and timing could change as the system approaches. Residents and travelers in northern Wisconsin are urged to closely monitor updated forecasts and be prepared for changing road conditions.

The National Weather Service advises checking the latest weather information and forecasts as the storm develops and taking appropriate precautions if travel is necessary.
