SOUTH CAROLINA — Public schools across South Carolina will be closed on multiple days in January 2026 in observance of two federal holidays, according to standard school calendar schedules followed by districts statewide.
Schools will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, for New Year’s Day. The holiday, which marks the beginning of the new calendar year, is observed nationwide and is traditionally included as a non-instructional day on school calendars in South Carolina.
Classes will also be canceled on Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The holiday honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Many school districts use the day both as a holiday and as an opportunity to recognize King’s contributions to civil rights, equality, and social justice.
No classes will be held on either date, and school offices and administrative buildings are also expected to be closed.
Parents and students are encouraged to check individual district calendars for confirmation and for details on any additional closures or schedule adjustments in January.
