Schools in Indiana could close multiple days next week

INDIANA — Several Indiana school districts could face multiple closures next week as three winter storm systems move through the Midwest.

Forecasters say the first round of snow is expected Saturday, bringing light accumulations across parts of northern and central Indiana. While totals from this initial system are generally expected to stay under a few inches, slick roads could create travel concerns heading into Monday morning.

A second, stronger system is forecast to develop Sunday night into Monday. This storm could have a greater impact on Indiana, particularly along and north of the Interstate 70 corridor. Current projections suggest some areas could receive between 1 and 5 inches of snow, though exact totals remain uncertain.

In addition to snowfall, portions of central and southern Indiana could see a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain as warmer air moves in above colder surface air. Even minor ice accumulation can make roads hazardous, especially on rural routes where many school buses operate.

School officials are closely monitoring the forecast, as icy conditions and overnight refreezing could extend closures beyond a single day in some districts.

A third storm is expected Tuesday into Wednesday. While parts of Indiana may see mostly rain, colder air lingering near the surface could allow additional snow or ice, particularly in northern counties.

With three systems forecast in quick succession, some Indiana districts could be forced to cancel classes for multiple days next week if hazardous road conditions persist.

Families are encouraged to stay alert for announcements from their local school systems as weather forecasts become more refined.
