Schools in Georgia could close this week

GEORGIA — A frost advisory issued across much of Georgia could lead to school delays or closures Thursday morning as temperatures drop to near-freezing levels.

The National Weather Service said the advisory will be in effect from early Thursday morning, with temperatures expected to fall as low as 33 to 36 degrees in many areas of the state.

The cold conditions are expected to create widespread frost, particularly between midnight and 9 a.m., which could impact morning commutes and school transportation.

District leaders across affected areas — including parts of north, central and east Georgia — may consider delaying start times or closing schools out of caution, especially in rural areas where buses travel long distances and students wait outdoors.

Officials warn that frost could reduce visibility on windshields, create slick spots on bridges and roadways, and make conditions uncomfortable or unsafe for students standing at bus stops.

The advisory covers a large portion of the state, including metro Atlanta and surrounding counties.

While no statewide closures have been announced, school systems are expected to monitor conditions overnight and make decisions early Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service is advising residents to take precautions, including protecting sensitive plants and preparing for cold early-morning conditions.
