TENNESSEE — A powerful winter storm that brought snow, ice and dangerously cold conditions to Tennessee over the weekend has forced widespread school closures and schedule changes for Monday, January 26, 2026 as communities cope with hazardous travel conditions and freezing temperatures.
Across Middle Tennessee, multiple school systems announced that all campuses will be closed Monday and in many cases Tuesday as well because of expected ice accumulation, sub-zero wind chills and unsafe roads.
Districts confirming closures include Cannon County Schools, Cheatham County Schools, Dickson County Schools, Franklin Special School District, Lebanon Special School District, Robertson County Schools, Rutherford County Schools, Sumner County Schools, Williamson County Schools and Wilson County Schools.
In Nashville-Davidson County, Metro Nashville Public Schools said all schools and district offices will remain closed both Monday and Tuesday. Before- and after-school care programs, extracurricular activities and athletic events are canceled during the closure.
Local officials in Murfreesboro confirmed city and county schools will be closed Monday, along with city offices and public transit suspended because of winter conditions.
In West Tennessee, multiple systems made similar decisions. Weakley County Schools, Dyersburg City Schools, Union City Schools and other districts in the region are shutting down Monday due to the risks posed by snow, ice and dangerous road conditions. Some school closures in West Tennessee are also extending into Tuesday.
School leaders across the state emphasized that student and staff safety is the top priority as travel remains treacherous. Families are urged to check with their local districts for the latest updates because closures or remote-learning plans could change as conditions evolve.
