OHIO — Recent social media posts have fueled speculation that former President Donald Trump, once he takes office in 2025, might issue another round of stimulus checks, according to a report from CBS.
However, experts say this is highly unlikely given current economic conditions and legislative hurdles.
During his first term, Trump signed off on two rounds of stimulus payments to Americans as part of the federal government’s response to the pandemic.
The checks were intended to help households weather the economic crisis caused by lockdowns and job losses.
But economists note that today’s circumstances are far removed from the early 2020s, when the pandemic’s impact and inflation reached critical levels.
The claims have gained traction on platforms like TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), with some users speculating about future payments and others questioning their eligibility.
However, economists emphasize that stimulus payments were not solely at the discretion of the president. Instead, they were part of three relief bills passed by Congress and signed into law by the sitting president.
“There is no current legislation or discussion in Congress about issuing new stimulus checks,” experts point out, making such payments improbable in the near future.
While some Americans still feel the pinch of inflation, analysts say the economy is not in the dire straits that prompted previous stimulus efforts.
For another round of checks to be issued, Congress would first need to draft and pass new legislation—a scenario that experts say is not currently on the horizon.
