NORTH CAROLINA — A student was arrested after a realistic-looking water gun used during a popular senior game prompted a school lockdown and police response at South Iredell High School, authorities said.
According to Troutman Police, the incident occurred Tuesday, March 17, when a store clerk called 911 believing a person was pointing a real firearm at two teenagers.
Officers later determined the object was a water gun being used as part of the “Senior Assassin” game, a tradition in which students attempt to “eliminate” classmates using toy water guns.
The school was placed on lockdown while officers investigated the report. Police said the water gun closely resembled a real firearm, which led to the initial concern.
An 18-year-old student was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct for disrupting school operations. A magistrate set bond at $5,000.
Authorities say similar incidents have prompted warnings across North Carolina, as replica-style toy guns can easily be mistaken for real weapons.
The incident remains under investigation.
