Possible ice could cause hazardous travel Saturday in Virginia

VIRGINIA — With snowy weather moving through Central Virginia on Friday, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is warning motorists that wet pavement could refreeze heading into Saturday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions.

VDOT said Friday evening that any remaining moisture on the roads may freeze overnight, especially on untreated surfaces.

Drivers are urged to use caution, limit travel and watch for icy patches on roadways that look wet or damp. Crews and contractors will continue monitoring and treating roads as needed, though most interstates and heavily traveled routes are expected to remain clear.

Officials cautioned that bridges, ramps and overpasses are particularly prone to freezing first. Motorists are asked to slow down and give road crews extra room to work.

Ahead of Friday’s winter weather, VDOT advised Virginians to avoid driving due to snow, freezing rain and ice. By late afternoon, Virginia State Police had responded to 214 crashes statewide in just over half a day, including 29 with injuries. Seventy-three of those crashes occurred within a four-hour span as conditions deteriorated.
