Police searching for wanted shooting suspects in Indiana

INDIANA — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were fired upon late Wednesday night during a vehicle pursuit connected to a domestic disturbance, authorities said. No injuries were reported, and the suspects remain at large.

Just before 9 p.m., North District officers were dispatched to the 7700 block of Knue Road, where a victim reported being assaulted by a man armed with a gun. The suspect fled in a vehicle before officers arrived, and police obtained a description.

Around midnight, an officer spotted the vehicle near East 30th Street and Ruckle Street. After backup arrived, officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled.

The pursuit continued until the 400 block of West 28th Street, where two people exited the vehicle. Police say at least one suspect fired multiple shots at officers, prompting one officer to return fire. The suspects then fled on foot.

IMPD deployed K9 units and a drone in the search and recovered cartridge casings in the area where the suspects fled. The vehicle was later found several blocks away.

The officer who returned fire is a seven-year veteran and had both a body-worn camera and in-car video recording at the time. Per department policy, the officer has been placed on administrative leave pending separate criminal and administrative investigations. A civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will hold a mandatory hearing after the investigations are complete.

The IMPD Victim Assistance Unit is working with the domestic assault victim. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency and the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office are assisting with the case.
