TENNESSEE — A Memphis police officer was shot Thursday night, prompting a statewide search for the suspect, according to authorities.

The shooting happened in Memphis, though details about the circumstances surrounding the incident have not been released. Memphis City Councilman JB Smiley Jr. confirmed on social media that an officer had been shot. The Memphis Police Department later said the officer was in critical but stable condition.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation issued a Blue Alert around midnight for 40-year-old Danell Maxwell, who is wanted for attempted first-degree murder of a police officer. Investigators said Maxwell has been added to the Tennessee Most Wanted list. A reward of up to $2,500 is being offered for information leading to his arrest.

Maxwell is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing about 180 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Authorities said he was last seen wearing dark clothing and an orange and green reflective vest and is considered armed and dangerous.

Police presence was reported at Regional One Medical Center, where numerous officers gathered, and at the scene near South Perkins Road and American Way in the Parkway Village area. The Tennessee Highway Patrol was also observed assisting at the scene.

Anyone with information is urged to call 1-800-TBI-FIND or the Memphis Police Department at 901-528-2274. The investigation remains ongoing.
