PENNSYLVANIA — Police are searching for a stolen vehicle believed to have been used in an attempted abduction outside a South Side school in Scranton earlier Monday, according to the Scranton Police Department.

Police said the attempted abduction occurred Monday morning in front of South Side Intermediate School and also on the 500 block of East Elm Street. Investigators said few details were immediately available, and the detective bureau declined to comment beyond the information already released.

According to police, the vehicle involved is a silver Hyundai Elantra with tinted windows that was reported stolen from the 500 block of Cedar Avenue. The car has a Pennsylvania license plate with the tag LYK1711. Police said the driver was described as a man wearing a black face mask.

Body camera images released by police show an officer attempting to approach the vehicle around 8:13 a.m. at the corner of Maple Street and Slocum Avenue, directly in front of the school. At one point in the footage, a hand can be seen extending toward the rear driver’s-side window, police said.

The Scranton School District said police have increased their presence around all school buildings as a precaution. District officials urged anyone who is approached under suspicious circumstances to call 911. The district also asked parents and guardians to pick students up on time at dismissal and, when possible, walk children home.

Anyone with information related to the incident or the stolen vehicle is asked to contact Scranton police.
