FLORIDA — A manhunt is underway in Brevard County after a suspect escaped police custody and attacked officers outside a Melbourne hospital Wednesday evening, authorities said.
According to the Melbourne Police Department, 20-year-old Eric Jerry was arrested on an outstanding warrant and was being transported to the Brevard County Jail when he complained of a medical issue. Officers diverted to Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital on Wickham Road.
Police said Jerry was able to slip out of his handcuffs during the ride. As officers attempted to remove him from the patrol vehicle, he allegedly attacked them and ran into wooded areas south of the hospital.
Officers searched for hours using K-9 units, drones and a helicopter but were unable to locate him.
Records show Jerry was most recently arrested over the weekend for driving without a license. Authorities said he previously served five years in prison on charges including armed burglary, grand theft auto and other offenses. He was released from prison in November.
West Melbourne Police Department, Palm Bay Police Department and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office are assisting in the search.
Police said there is no known threat to the public at this time.
Anyone with information on Jerry’s whereabouts is urged to contact Melbourne police or Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS.
The investigation is ongoing.
