NORTH CAROLINA — Residents across Union County have reported hearing loud, unexplained booms in recent days that have rattled windows and sparked concern, but authorities say they have been unable to determine the source.
According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, deputies have spent several days investigating reports of the mysterious sounds, canvassing multiple areas throughout the county in an effort to track down their origin.
“Over the past few days, deputies have canvassed numerous areas trying to track down what many residents are describing as an ‘explosion,’” the sheriff’s office said in a statement released this week.
Despite the widespread reports, officials said investigators have found no injuries, no property damage, and no missing or damaged structures that would explain the booms. Authorities said the sounds have been loud enough to be heard across large portions of the county, leaving both residents and law enforcement puzzled.
“Don’t worry, it’s not just you. We’re wondering too,” the sheriff’s office said.
The agency is now asking for the public’s help to determine the cause of the noises. Officials said they are especially interested in hearing from anyone who may have captured video footage showing a flash or who can provide more detailed information about the sounds beyond describing them as a boom.
