PENNSYLVANIA — Winter weather and hazardous road conditions across Pennsylvania have prompted numerous school districts to announce closures, delays and remote learning plans for Tuesday.
Philadelphia Region
In southeastern Pennsylvania, the School District of Philadelphia and several surrounding districts will remain closed for in-person learning on Tuesday, Jan. 27, due to lingering impacts from a major snowstorm that struck the area over the weekend. Students will participate in remote learning instead, and all after-school activities and programs are canceled.
Western Pennsylvania
Across the Pittsburgh area and broader western part of the state, schools continue to respond to winter storm conditions and extreme cold. Many districts have announced they will be closed, delayed or operating remotely on Tuesday as temperatures remain dangerously low following heavy snowfall. An extreme cold warning is in effect for parts of the region.
In Butler County, several districts released detailed schedules for the day:
- Allegheny-Clarion Valley School District — Closed
- Butler Area School District — Remote learning
- Freeport Area School District — Closed
- Karns City Area School District — Remote learning
- Knoch School District — Remote learning
- Mars Area School District — Remote learning
- Moniteau School District — Remote learning
- Seneca Valley School District — Remote learning
- Slippery Rock Area School District — Closed
Colleges including Slippery Rock University and Butler County Community College are also listed with adjusted schedules.
South Central and South-Central PA
In areas such as Fulton and Franklin Counties, some schools are operating on flexible instruction days or remote instruction plans due to cold temperatures and secondary road conditions, while other districts have opted for full closures.
Summary of Weather Impact
The closures and schedule adjustments follow a weekend winter storm that brought significant snowfall and compounded hazardous travel conditions across much of Pennsylvania. Local weather forecasts also call for continued cold and possible icy conditions into midweek, shaping districts’ decisions to delay or cancel in-person schooling.
