Part of I-24 in Kentucky shut down following diesel spill

KENTUCKY — All lanes of the Interstate 24 Ohio River bridge were closed Friday morning following a crash and diesel fuel spill, according to transportation officials.

The incident occurred on the bridge connecting Kentucky and Illinois, blocking westbound traffic and prompting officials to activate Emergency Detour Route “A.”

Authorities said the closure could last several hours as crews work to clear the crash and clean up the fuel spill.

Drivers traveling westbound are being directed to exit at Exit 16 and follow posted detour signs. Law enforcement officers have been stationed at key intersections to assist with traffic flow.

Officials said access to westbound I-24 is restricted at several exits, including Exits 3, 4, 7 and 11, in an effort to reduce congestion and prevent additional crashes on surrounding roadways.

Passenger vehicles are being rerouted to the U.S. 45 Ohio River “Brookport” Bridge, while commercial vehicles must use the U.S. 51 Ohio River “Cairo” Bridge, as trucks are not permitted on the Brookport crossing.

Transportation officials urged drivers to expect delays and use caution while traveling through the area.
