FLORIDA — A major crash involving tractor-trailers and multiple passenger vehicles has forced the shutdown of the southbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike in Martin County on Friday afternoon, authorities said.

The accident occurred south of Palm City near Jupiter and prompted a large response from law enforcement and fire rescue crews.

According to officials, at least two tractor-trailers and several other vehicles were involved in the crash. Emergency responders were working at the scene while police secured the area.

Authorities said the southbound lanes of the Turnpike will remain closed for an extended period as crews investigate the crash and clear the wreckage.

The incident is also causing delays in the northbound lanes as traffic backs up near the crash site.

Drivers are being advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while emergency crews continue their work.

Additional details about possible injuries or the cause of the crash were not immediately released.
