OHIO — Northeastern Ohio is bracing for hazardous travel conditions as heavy lake effect snow is forecast to impact several counties from early Thursday through Friday evening.
The National Weather Service has issued Lake Effect Snow Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories for Cuyahoga, Geauga, Ashtabula, Lake, Portage, and Trumbull counties.
Snow totals are expected to vary significantly by location. The heaviest accumulations, between 8 and 13 inches, are expected in Geauga County, Ashtabula County, and southeastern Cuyahoga County.

Lighter snow totals of 3 to 6 inchesare forecast in northern Portage County, while northern Lake County and northern Cuyahoga County may see 4 inches or less. Trumbull County could see 3 to 5 inches in the north and 1 to 3 inches in the southern portion.
Strong winds, gusting up to 50 mph in some areas, will create blowing and drifting snow, causing whiteout conditions and drastically reduced visibility. Officials warn that roadways could become treacherous and potentially life-threatening, especially during peak holiday travel periods.
Travelers are strongly urged to delay trips if possible. Those who must travel are advised to drive with extreme caution, allow extra time, and keep emergency supplies such as food, water, and flashlights in their vehicles. Sudden changes in visibility and rapidly accumulating snow could make even familiar routes dangerous.
The Ohio Department of Transportation and Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission recommend checking current road conditions at ohgo.com before setting out. During lake effect snow events, conditions can vary dramatically over short distances, so motorists should remain alert and prepared for sudden changes in road and weather conditions.
