Over 200 animals seized in alleged Ohio cockfighting operation

OHIO — More than 200 animals were seized from a suspected cockfighting operation in Lorain County, according to the Friendship Animal Protective League (FAPL) Humane Investigation Department.

Agents executed a search warrant on Feb. 28 at a property in Sheffield Township, just north of Elyria.

Authorities discovered 131 game roosters, several fighting pits, and cockfighting equipment, including razor-sharp blades known as “gaffs,” which are attached to roosters’ legs during fights.

Upon arrival, agents reportedly found individuals in the process of “dubbing” some of the roosters—removing their combs, wattles, and earlobes to reduce blood loss and prolong fights.

In addition to the roosters, investigators seized 97 hens, five rabbits, three dogs, and four pigeons.

A probable cause hearing will be scheduled to determine the fate of the seized animals as the investigation continues.

Just three days earlier, agents conducted a separate search warrant at another suspected cockfighting site, where they confiscated 21 roosters.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any arrests or charges have been made in connection with either case.
