SOUTH CAROLINA — A Monday afternoon shooting in the Cross Anchor community left one trespasser critically injured and another in custody, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the incident occurred around 3 p.m. in the 600 block of Union Highway when two individuals allegedly attempted to steal from a property and were confronted by the owner. During the confrontation, a shooting took place.

The injured trespasser was taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where they remain in critical condition. The second individual, Robert Michael Liner II, was arrested and charged with petit larceny for attempting to steal less than $2,000 worth of property.

Because the property owner is a retired Spartanburg County Sheriff’s deputy, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has taken over the investigation. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
