GEORGIA — A man is in custody after returning to a restaurant with a gun and opening fire following an earlier dispute Tuesday morning in downtown Atlanta.
According to Atlanta Police Department, officers responded just before 8 a.m. to reports of a shooting at Summit Cafeteria on Marietta Street NW. Investigators said the suspect had been involved in a dispute with one or more people at the restaurant earlier and later returned armed.
A female victim was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Police said a man inside the restaurant was the intended target of the shooting but was not injured. No other victims or suspects were located.
The scene is located a few blocks from the Georgia State University campus. University police officers said they were nearby, heard gunfire, and encountered the suspect leaving the building with a gun in his hand. Officers took the suspect into custody without incident, according to police.
The suspect was transported to Atlanta Police Public Safety Headquarters for processing. Multiple charges are pending. The investigation remains ongoing.
