OHIO — The Swanton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a serious crash that occurred late Thursday morning on the Ohio Turnpike in Williams County.
The crash happened at 11:40 a.m. at milepost 8 westbound in Superior Township and involved a passenger vehicle and a commercial tractor-trailer.
According to investigators, a 2021 Freightliner tractor-trailer operated by 42-year-old Blagoj Zajkov of Plainfield, Illinois, was traveling westbound and had slowed in traffic when it was struck from behind by a 2013 Ford Edge.
The Ford Edge was driven by 19-year-old Ellie Hanshaw of Burbank, Ohio. After the impact, the vehicle veered off the left side of the roadway and overturned in the median.
A passenger in the Ford, 19-year-old Sophia Linder of West Salem, Ohio, was ejected from the vehicle and sustained life-threatening injuries. She was flown by Mercy Health Life Flight to Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo.
Hanshaw also suffered serious injuries and was transported by ProMedica Air to the same hospital. Zajkov was not injured.
The Highway Patrol confirmed that all occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Emergency crews from Williams County EMS, the Montpelier Fire Department, Hutch’s Towing, and the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission assisted at the scene. The westbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike were closed for about an hour but have since reopened.
The crash remains under investigation.
