OHIO — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a serious injury crash involving an Ohio Department of Transportation snowplow in Defiance County early Sunday morning.

According to the patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 1:50 a.m. on December 14 along State Route 66, south of the Defiance–Williams County line in Tiffin Township.

Troopers said a 2000 Buick Regal, driven northbound by 47-year-old Scott Burchfield of Montpelier, struck the rear of an ODOT plow truck that was actively treating the roadway at the time.

Authorities said the plow truck had its green, amber, and white warning lights activated when the collision occurred. Following the impact, Burchfield’s vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and caught fire.

Burchfield was transported by ambulance to Defiance Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. The driver of the ODOT plow truck was not injured.

Troopers said alcohol is suspected to have been a factor in the crash. The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Defiance County Sheriff’s Office, Tiffin Township Fire and Rescue, and K K Collision. The crash remains under investigation.
