PENNSYLVANIA — A 3-year-old boy is in critical condition after a shooting that police believe may have been accidental inside a Philadelphia home.
According to authorities, the incident happened around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1, on the 2100 block of South 26th Street in the city’s Grays Ferry neighborhood. The shooting occurred on the second floor of the residence.
Police said preliminary findings indicate the child was in a bedroom when he suffered what investigators described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Family members transported the child to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Authorities said the firearm involved has not been recovered, though a magazine was found at the scene.
Police reported that several individuals, including teenagers, were inside the home at the time of the shooting. Investigators said those present gave conflicting statements, and some were not cooperating.
One man has been taken into custody in connection with the incident, though no formal charges have been filed.
The investigation is ongoing.
