NORTH CAROLINA — A driver was seriously injured after a stolen vehicle crashed and caught fire following a police chase late Wednesday night, authorities said.
According to police, officers first spotted the vehicle within town limits displaying dealer tags but no license plate. Investigators believe the car had been stolen from a dealership in the Garner area.
When officers attempted a traffic stop, the driver sped away, leading to a pursuit that continued into Wake County.
The chase ended on East Garner Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle, crashed into a tree and the car burst into flames. Authorities said the vehicle quickly became fully engulfed.
Officers were able to pull the driver from the burning wreck. The driver suffered serious injuries, including burns, and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police said the vehicle was destroyed in the crash. Charges are pending as investigators work to secure warrants.
The incident remains under investigation.
