ALABAMA — A Colbert County deputy shot a man following a motorcycle pursuit Wednesday night after the suspect allegedly pulled a firearm, according to authorities.

Officials said a deputy initially attempted to stop a motorcycle carrying a male driver and a female passenger for an expired tag. The driver refused to stop, leading deputies on a brief chase before the motorcycle came to a stop near Cottontown Lane around 10 p.m.

Authorities said the male driver then allegedly pulled a gun on the deputy, who fired, striking the suspect.

Deputies immediately rendered aid at the scene, and the injured man was later airlifted to Huntsville Hospital. His condition has not been released.

Investigators later determined the driver had an outstanding felony warrant for desertion from the U.S. Army. The female passenger also had a felony warrant in Colbert County for chemical endangerment of a child.

No deputies were injured during the incident.

Colbert County Sheriff Eric Balentine said incidents involving suspects confronting law enforcement with weapons can lead to deadly outcomes. The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave while the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency conducts an investigation.

The incident remains under investigation.
