INDIANA — One person was critically injured early Sunday, August 31, following a high-speed pursuit in Whitley and Huntington counties, Indiana State Police said.
The incident began when a white Mercedes, suspected of fleeing an attempted break-in in Columbia City, evaded a traffic stop.
Troopers spotted the vehicle traveling south on State Road 9 in Whitley County. When an Indiana State Police officer attempted to stop the car, the driver sped away, prompting a police chase.
The pursuit continued onto County Road 200 East, which becomes Meridian Road in Huntington County. Police said the vehicle’s lights were turned off before it crashed into a utility pole. The driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. No other vehicles were involved.
The Indiana State Police are investigating the crash in cooperation with the Huntington and Whitley County Sheriff’s Departments, South Whitley Police, Parkview EMS, Samaritan, and Smiths Towing.
