ILLINOIS — A man was hospitalized after being beaten with a metal pipe during a violent attack over the weekend, according to the Decatur Police Department.
Police said the victim and suspect, both in their 30s, had a falling out last September. The two crossed paths again on Aug. 21 and spoke without conflict. The following day, the suspect asked the victim to hang out near North College and West Olive Streets.
While at a home, police said the suspect attacked the victim from behind, striking him with a metal pipe and stomping on his back until he lost consciousness. The victim later woke up covered in what smelled like gasoline. When the suspect noticed, he allegedly struck the victim again.
A woman inside the home began arguing with the suspect, giving the victim a chance to escape. The victim was taken to a hospital and later discharged on Aug. 23, when he reported the incident to police.
The suspect has been booked on preliminary charges of aggravated battery with great bodily harm. Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
