OHIO — A woman was found dead in the snow Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle in Elyria, according to police.

In a news release, the Elyria Police Department said officers were called at about 7:30 p.m. to a home in the 6700 block of West River Road North after a report of a woman lying unresponsive on the treelawn. Elyria Fire Department crews and LifeCare Ambulance personnel also responded to the scene.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The Lorain County Coroner’s Office responded and took over the death investigation.

Police said the woman’s injuries were consistent with being hit by a vehicle. Surveillance video from a nearby home confirmed that the woman was struck by a car and identified the vehicle as a maroon Ford Escape.

Investigators later located the vehicle at a home in Lorain. Detectives and crash investigators obtained a search warrant and executed it at approximately 11:35 p.m. Saturday. The vehicle was seized, and investigators interviewed the driver.

According to police, the man admitted he was driving in the area at the time of the crash and told officers he believed he had hit a deer. Police said alcohol and drugs are not suspected as contributing factors.

The investigation remains active, and no charges have been filed at this time. Police said criminal charges are anticipated pending the outcome of the investigation. The names of those involved are not being released, and additional updates will be provided as they become available.
