ALABAMA — A man is dead following a pursuit involving Lauderdale County deputies that ended in a pond Thursday afternoon, according to authorities.

Lauderdale County Sheriff Joe Hamilton said the incident began around 12:20 p.m. in the Anderson Community near County Road 656. Two deputies were investigating a report involving a man with active warrants and a stolen vehicle when they located the suspect in a vehicle.

According to the sheriff, the man fled the scene and allegedly attempted to strike deputies with his vehicle as he drove away. Deputies fired shots during the encounter. The suspect then traveled north on Highway 207, prompting a pursuit.

Authorities said the suspect eventually wrecked the vehicle during the chase and ran from the crash site on foot. Deputies pursued him on foot before he jumped into a large pond.

Sheriff Hamilton said deputies were unable to apprehend the suspect from the water, and he was later found dead.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigations has been notified and will handle the investigation into the incident.

No additional details have been released at this time.
