OHIO — Cleveland Police are investigating after a newborn baby girl was found dead early Friday morning on the city’s West Side.
According to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office, the infant was discovered in the 2200 block of West 73rd Street in the West Boulevard neighborhood on August 23.
Police said officers were called to the area around 2:17 a.m. for a suspected overdose. When they arrived, Cleveland EMS was already treating a 39-year-old woman who appeared to be suffering from an altered mental state caused by an unknown substance.
During the response, officers learned the woman had recently given birth and immediately began searching the area. The baby was found inside a cloth shopping bag on a driveway and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital for treatment. The medical examiner will determine the cause of the infant’s death.
No additional details have been released, and the case remains under investigation.
