SOUTH CAROLINA — One person is dead after an SUV was found submerged in water in the Sea Pines community on Hilton Head Island, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the vehicle was discovered on South Beach Lagoon Drive after authorities received a call around noon Wednesday reporting a car in the water.
Officials identified the vehicle as a 2000 Lexus SUV. One person was found inside and was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining fatal injuries.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol said troopers were requested by the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and are continuing to investigate the incident.
Authorities believe the SUV may have entered the water sometime Monday evening, though the exact time has not been confirmed.
Investigators are working to determine how the vehicle ended up in the water, including the direction it was traveling prior to the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing.
