NORTH CAROLINA — A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal shooting Thursday night in Laurinburg, according to police.
Laurinburg Police Department said Maurice Deshawn McCoy, 46, of Wagram, North Carolina, surrendered to law enforcement and was charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Police said the shooting occurred around 11 p.m. on Hood Drive in the McIntosh Apartment area. Officers responded to the scene and found a victim suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim was identified as 21-year-old Keonta Pate. He was transported to Scotland Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injury.
Investigators said McCoy is in a dating relationship with Pate’s mother. Police said an altercation occurred, which led to McCoy shooting Pate.
McCoy was taken to the Scotland County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional details were released.
