One person dead, four arrested following shooting incident in Ohio

OHIO — A 20-year-old Massillon man was killed in a shooting Wednesday evening in Canton, and four suspects have been arrested, according to police.

Officers with the Canton Police Department responded around 5:25 p.m. Jan. 28 to multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting in the 600 block of Alan Page Drive SE. When officers arrived, they found a man outside the Skyline Terrace Apartments suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso.

Canton Fire Department paramedics transported the victim to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, where he later died. Police identified the victim as Ta Shaun M. Smith, 20, of Massillon.

According to Canton Police Chief John Gabbard, officers located the suspects in a nearby building and took them into custody. The following individuals were identified along with the listed charges:

  • Niko Marshall, 18, of Canton: Murder; Felonious assault; Having weapons under disability; Probation violation.
  • Nathaniel Sanford, 33, of Sherrodsville: Murder; Tampering with evidence.
  • De Iveon J. Newman, 19, of Massillon: Receiving stolen property.
  • Kymani James, 20, of Massillon: Tampering with evidence.
