PENNSYLVANIA — A snow squall caused hazardous driving conditions in Luzerne County on Monday morning, resulting in an eight-car pile-up on Interstate 81.
The crash occurred shortly before 6 a.m. near the Route 93/Conyngham exit, according to the West Hazleton Fire Department. The Luzerne County Coroner confirmed that one person died in the crash.
Officials said one man was ejected from his vehicle and landed down an embankment. Emergency crews were able to rescue him and transport him to a hospital.
Traffic delays have been reported in both directions, and I-81 southbound remains closed from the I-80/81 split to Exit 143 in Hazleton. Authorities urged drivers to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
