FLORIDA — A New Port Richey woman was killed early Sunday morning in a crash along Interstate 75 in Sarasota County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash occurred just after midnight when the woman’s pickup truck was struck by a passing vehicle while stopped in the roadway.

According to investigators, the 34-year-old woman had been driving northbound on I-75 while towing a trailer loaded with sod. The vehicle was stopped in the right lane as two passengers exited to check on an issue with one of the trailer’s tires.

Authorities said a 61-year-old man driving a semi-truck northbound approached the stopped vehicle and collided with the trailer and pickup.

The driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene. Two adult passengers who were outside the vehicle at the time, along with a 3-year-old child inside the truck, suffered minor injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital. The driver of the semi-truck was also hospitalized with minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
